By Year built
The year a house was built according to the U.S. Census Bureau is the year the building was first constructed, not when it was remodeled or added to. For mobile homes, houseboats, and recreational vehicles, the manufacturer’s model year is used. For buildings that were rebuilt after complete destruction, the year of construction is the year in which the building was rebuilt. For units that are under construction, they are not considered housing units until all exterior windows, doors, and final usable floors are in place.
